Working on sculpture is the most mindful, contemplative, and engaged process for me. My sculptural work tells a story or explores a theme. This work takes time and planning. Or maybe this works takes humor and patience. Themes are slowly developed with each iteration. Triangles become birds, birds become rattles, rattles become eggs; and the process continues.
This series of vases was born out of a desire to make work that combines multiple facets of life into one piece. We are living in fractured times, there is a strong desire in most of us to come together, to understand each other, to regain a sense of community. These pots are my attempt to understand where we are in the world. The background of each vase is meant to evoke the natural world, particularly the area around Bolin Creek in Carrboro. To elicit the feeling of nature I have used 15-20 layers of color on each piece. On top of this complex base are more additions: text, images, texture, vibrant colors, inclusions of semi-precious stones, or carvings. These layers speak to intellect, community, work, awe, and joy. Each piece tells a unique story that is both personal and universal.
